The reason the manufacturer went to an electric pump was because of fuel injection. The mechanical pump is easy to change if it fails, which it seldom does.The line coming from the pump (over the top of the motor) goes into the single nipple on the back of the filter, the nipple directly across from that (same diameter) goes to the carb, and the second nipple on that side of the filter goes to the return line. If it were mine, i would run new line from the front to the rear for both the supply and the return lines.
